Bob Odenkirk as Sheriff Ulysses - a man whose provisional posting to a quaint Midwestern town was supposed to be a quiet respite from everything - and it very much is not. Director Ben Wheatley brings his signature over-the-top carnage to what sounds on paper like a simple premise, and the result is consistently, ridiculously entertaining. Odenkirk's gruff, playful presence is perfect for this. Lena Headey is excellent in support. Critics called it simple, ridiculous, and consistently entertaining. They were not wrong.

The action-comedy of the year. Go in expecting something between Nobody and Hot Fuzz and you'll land in exactly the right place.

The Bluff

Set in the 19th century, The Bluff centres on a former female pirate - Ercell "Bloody Mary" Bodden, played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas - who believed she had escaped her violent past, finding peace with her family in the Cayman Islands. When her notorious former captain arrives seeking revenge, she is pulled back into a brutal fight for survival. The film is directed by the Russo Brothers, with Karl Urban as the antagonist and Zoe Saldana in a supporting role.

The elevator pitch is irresistible: Priyanka Chopra Jonas as a sword-fighting pirate in a 19th-century period action epic directed by the people behind Avengers: Endgame, with real practical stunts. Hollywood almost never greenlit original action blockbusters at this scale anymore. The fact that this one exists and is arriving in 2026 is worth celebrating before you've even seen a single frame.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die

Gore Verbinski's first film in a decade - and the Pirates of the Caribbean director returning with an action-comedy about a man claiming to be from the future who shows up at a Los Angeles party. Sam Rockwell in the lead role, with Haley Lu Richardson, Zazie Beetz, and Juno Temple in support. The premise has enormous potential and Verbinski has never made a film without visual imagination. The most intriguing wildcard of 2026.

Go in knowing nothing and let it surprise you. That's how Verbinski's best films work. This feels like one of them.

Avengers: Doomsday

The biggest superhero event in years. Avengers: Doomsday brings together a cast that spans the entire MCU - Anthony Mackie, Chris Hemsworth, Letitia Wright, Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Robert Downey Jr. returning, and an extraordinary ensemble beyond that. This is the kind of theatrical event that the MCU built itself to deliver, and the scale of what's been assembled suggests they are swinging for something enormous.

The Russo Brothers directed this one too - the same duo behind Endgame and Infinity War. When they are at their best, nobody does large-scale action spectacle better. The question is whether Doomsday matches those heights. The appetite for it is as high as anything the genre has produced in years.

Street Fighter

Noah Centineo as Ken Masters and Andrew Koji as Ryu, thrown back together for the World Warrior Tournament. The Street Fighter reboot is leaning into the hyper-stylized aesthetic of the game rather than trying to ground it - which is exactly the right instinct. Video game adaptations have been on a remarkable run recently and Street Fighter has the source material, the character designs, and the mythology to be one of the best of the current wave.

The action choreography in the trailers suggests they've actually figured out how to make a fighting game feel cinematic. Cautiously optimistic is a significant understatement.

Mortal Kombat II

The fan favourite champions return - now joined by Johnny Cage - for a gory battle to defeat Shao Kahn and save Earthrealm. Karl Urban, Tadanobu Asano, and an expanded cast with Tati Gabrielle, Damon Herriman, and Adeline Rudolph. The first Mortal Kombat film overcame low expectations by committing fully to the game's brutality and mythology. The sequel has a bigger cast, a bigger villain, and presumably a bigger budget. For fans of the franchise, this is mandatory.

The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's epic poem. A cast that includes Tom Cruise, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, and Emma D'Arcy. This is not a conventional action film - but Nolan's work always delivers sequences of extraordinary physical and cinematic scale that sit comfortably within the genre. If Dunkirk is in the action canon, The Odyssey will be too.

This is the prestige action event of the year. The kind of film designed for the largest screen possible and will define what late 2026 cinema conversation looks like.

Digger
