Being tired changes what you need from a film completely. The things that make a movie good on a fresh Saturday afternoon โ€” slow burn tension, unreliable narrators, dense dialogue โ€” become exhausting at 10pm on a Wednesday when your brain is already running on fumes. You need something different. Something that does the heavy lifting.

Low effort doesn't mean bad. Every film on this list is genuinely good. What they share is that they're engineered to pull you in without asking anything back. Clear stakes. Momentum that never stalls. Characters you like spending time with. A world that's either warm enough or exciting enough that you stop thinking about whatever was draining you an hour ago.

No subtitles required. No second viewing needed to understand what happened. Just films that work when you're running on empty.

EDITOR'S PICK ยท PERFECT TIRED WATCH

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Wes Anderson's most purely enjoyable film. A concierge at a famous European hotel is wrongly accused of murder and goes on the run with his lobby boy. The whole thing moves at a sprint โ€” Anderson never lets a scene go on a second longer than it needs to, and every frame is packed with something interesting to look at. You don't need to follow it closely because it carries you. Ralph Fiennes is giving one of the funniest performances of his career and the supporting cast reads like someone raided every good actor working in the 2010s.

This is the film to put on when you're too tired to commit to anything with stakes. It's warm, funny, and over before you've had time to feel guilty about watching something easy.

If you fall asleep for ten minutes you won't lose the thread. That's not a criticism โ€” it's exactly what you need tonight.

IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP WATCHING

Knives Out

A wealthy crime novelist dies the night of his birthday party and a private detective turns up to investigate. Knives Out is a masterclass in momentum โ€” Rian Johnson gives you just enough information to think you understand what's happening, then pulls the rug out, then gives you a new problem to track. It moves fast, it's funny, and Daniel Craig clearly enjoyed himself more making this than anything else he's ever been in. Ana de Armas carries the whole film and makes it look effortless.

The key thing here: it's easy to watch but it doesn't feel cheap. You're engaged the whole way through without it ever demanding anything difficult from you.

Perfect for a tired evening because the mystery pulls you forward without you having to do any work. The film does the thinking for you.

RELENTLESSLY WATCHABLE

The Martian

An astronaut is stranded alone on Mars and has to figure out how to survive until a rescue mission can reach him. The premise sounds stressful but The Martian is actually one of the most relaxing films on this list. Matt Damon's Mark Watney is funny, competent, and relentlessly upbeat โ€” watching someone solve problems with confidence is genuinely soothing when you're tired. There's no villain, no interpersonal drama, no subplot you need to track. Just a man farming potatoes on Mars and the people trying to bring him home.

The 2.5 hour runtime sounds daunting when you're tired, but it moves so well you won't notice. One of the easiest long films to sit through.

GENUINELY JOYFUL

Paddington 2

Paddington is wrongly imprisoned for stealing a rare pop-up book and his family in Windsor Gardens sets out to prove his innocence. Paddington 2 is one of the best films of the 2010s by any measure โ€” funny, warm, beautifully made, and with a villain from Hugh Grant that is so perfectly judged it makes you forgive everything he did in the nineties. It works for adults completely on its own terms. You don't need children in the room to justify watching this. You just need to be tired and want something that will make you feel like the world is basically decent.

This is the single safest recommendation on this list. Nobody has ever regretted putting on Paddington 2.

INSTANTLY LIKEABLE

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

A troubled city kid is placed with foster parents in rural New Zealand. His foster mother dies suddenly and he ends up on the run in the bush with his reluctant foster uncle, with half the country's law enforcement in pursuit. Taika Waititi made this before Thor: Ragnarok and it's still his best film. Sam Neill is extraordinary. The kid, Julian Dennison, is one of the best child performances in recent cinema. The New Zealand landscape is stunning. The whole thing is funny from the first scene and keeps getting funnier without ever losing its warmth.

One of those films you recommend to everyone and they all come back the next day to thank you. Low effort, high reward.

EFFORTLESSLY COOL

Ocean's Eleven

Eleven people plan to rob three Las Vegas casinos simultaneously. Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven has been rewatched more times than almost any film of its era because it's basically impossible to have a bad time watching it. The cast โ€” Clooney, Pitt, Roberts, Garcia, Damon, Elliott Gould, Bernie Mac โ€” is operating in a register of pure professional enjoyment. Nobody is straining. Everyone looks like they're having the best time of their lives. The heist itself is clever without being complicated. This is the definition of a low effort watch.

You can have seen this ten times and it still works on a tired evening. Familiarity makes it easier, not worse.

๐Ÿ˜ด More Low Effort Films for Tired Evenings

These ones lean warmer and lighter. Good for when you're not just tired but done โ€” when you need something that asks nothing and gives a lot back.

VISUALLY CARRIES YOU

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

A daydreaming photo editor at Life magazine goes on an actual adventure to track down a missing negative. Ben Stiller directed this and it's his best work behind the camera by a distance. The film is stunning to look at โ€” Iceland, the Himalayas, Greenland โ€” and the story is simple enough that you can drift in and out without losing anything. It's about a man who stops imagining his life and starts living it, which is either a cliche or exactly what you need to hear on a tired evening, depending on where you are.

Put it on when you want something that looks beautiful and asks nothing of you. The visuals alone are worth it.

PURE COMFORT

Crazy Rich Asians

An economics professor accompanies her boyfriend to Singapore for a wedding and discovers his family is one of the richest in Asia. Crazy Rich Asians works as a tired evening watch because it's visually opulent, emotionally straightforward, and has no interest in making you work. The stakes are clear, the protagonist is likeable, the fashion and locations are extraordinary, and Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh give you exactly the mother-daughter conflict you came for. It's a romance that knows what it is and executes it without apology.

The kind of film where you can close your eyes for five minutes and not miss anything critical โ€” but you won't want to.

FOOD AND GOOD FEELINGS

Chef

A chef quits his job at a prestigious restaurant after a public meltdown, buys a food truck, and drives it across America with his son. Jon Favreau wrote, directed, and stars, and the whole film has the energy of someone making exactly what they wanted to make without any interference. The food looks extraordinary. The road trip is warm. The relationship between the father and son is handled without sentiment or manipulation. Chef is the low effort movie equivalent of a good meal โ€” satisfying, uncomplicated, and you feel better after it than before.

Watch this on an empty stomach only if you're prepared to order food immediately after. The cooking sequences are genuinely dangerous.

WARM AND GENTLE

About Time

A young man discovers he can travel back in time and uses it, initially, to improve his romantic life. Richard Curtis made this after Love Actually and it's quieter, more honest, and better. The time travel mechanic is simple and the film never gets tangled in paradoxes. What it's actually about is paying attention to ordinary life โ€” which sounds like a greetings card sentiment but lands completely because Domhnall Gleeson and Bill Nighy are so good together. The last twenty minutes hit harder than you expect.

Tire-proof. You can be half asleep and this one still reaches you.

QUIETLY CHARMING

The Intern

A 70-year-old widower joins a fashion startup as a senior intern and becomes unexpectedly indispensable. Robert De Niro playing a warm, competent, emotionally available older man is a different experience to most De Niro performances and it works completely. Anne Hathaway as the founder navigating work and marriage is given more to do than the premise suggests. The film is gentle, moves at a comfortable pace, and has no interest in being anything other than nice. On a tired evening, nice is exactly enough.

This one is underrated as a low effort watch. Nothing bad happens. Nobody is cruel. It's just two good people being decent to each other for two hours.

TURNS YOUR BRAIN OFF INSTANTLY

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Four teenagers get sucked into a video game and have to complete it to escape โ€” as the avatars they chose, which are nothing like themselves. The comedy here comes from the body-swap element: a shy teenage girl is now The Rock, a vain popular girl is now Jack Black. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black are all clearly enjoying themselves and the jokes land consistently. This is a film built purely to entertain you for two hours. It has no other ambition and it achieves that ambition completely.

Turn your brain off, press play, laugh at Jack Black being a teenage girl. That's the whole deal and it's enough.

HIDDEN GEM

The Map of Tiny Perfect Things

A teenage boy stuck in a time loop meets a girl who is also stuck in it. They decide to map all the small, perfect moments happening around them each day instead of trying to escape. This is a smaller film than most on this list but it earns its place because it's warm, funny, and moves well. The time loop premise is familiar but the approach โ€” two people choosing to find beauty in repetition rather than fighting it โ€” is different enough to feel fresh. It ends well. That matters when you're tired.

If you liked About Time or Palm Springs, this sits in the same space. Underseen and worth an hour and a half of your tired evening.

"The best low effort film isn't the one that asks nothing of you. It's the one that gives you so much you forget you were tired."

How to Pick the Right One Tonight

If you want something with momentum and a plot that moves: Knives Out or Ocean's Eleven. Both pull you forward without asking you to concentrate hard.

If you want something warm that will send you to bed feeling good: Paddington 2, About Time, or Chef. All three end well and leave you in a better mood than they found you.

If you want something visually absorbing that you can drift in and out of: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty or The Grand Budapest Hotel. Both are beautiful enough that even half-watching is rewarding.

If you're so tired you genuinely can't commit to anything: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. It requires nothing and delivers consistently for two hours.

The worst thing you can do on a tired evening is spend forty minutes looking for something to watch and then pick something that demands your full attention. These films exist precisely so that doesn't happen. Pick one, press play, stop thinking.
